Rear axle mk1

Hello, my mk1 have a double wheel rear axle but i dont know the ratio of the group.I can buy a mk3 ( year 1992 ) double wheel rear axle with 5.14:1 ratio but o dont know if the axle os the same of a mk1 van.

Rear axle 125-175 in Mk1 can be with ratio 4,63. 5,14. 5,83 and 6,17. https://www.capri.pl/library/microfilms/transit74/C1.60
If you have not any identification plate in your van, lift one rear wheel and turn it - keeping count of drive shaft. Remember - it will turns doubly, because works only one wheel. Compare half number of drive shaft rotations to one full wheel rotation.

If its still there, it should have a small aluminium tag on one of the differential cover bolts with the ratio stamped on it.

Thank you very much, my van was a 1.7 v4 and i want to install a 2.5 di with a type 9 5 speed gear box.

The 1.7 Firevans I have seen had a 5.83 diff fitted.

Believe I’ve read on forum that the Mk 3 axle does fit on a Mk1/2, but if I remember correctly, the axle width is slightly narrower by approx 2 or 3 cm than the Mk1/2 axle so the wheels are further in arches, but not really noticeable amount. Best ratio to get is 4.63 if you can find one, they are top of most people list when changing double wheel axles.

4.63 is longer than 5.83? How many rpm do you think would go with my group 5.83 and the 5-speed box at 60 mph?

If you pull the diff cover off the diff ratio is scribed on the crownwheel If using a mk 3 axle dont mix the half shafts or there will be weeping and knashing of teeth .

My old V4 petrol with a 4 speed and a 5.83 would be redlining at 55-60 mph ( 4750-5000 rpm) screaming, not happy or comfortable, 5 speed will have better top gear, but diesels not as many rpm, it will be screaming too.
