1973 Mk1 Camper insurance issue...

Ive just bought a 73 pop top camper from ebay but am a little stuck on the insurance front. Where do you guys suggest I look? I am 23 (I know a few wont insure campers for younger drivers) and I drive another van on a daily basis! The few I have Phoned have had difficulty find the actual van spec.

This is the van, can anyone tell me any of the details I may need to help the insurance.

All I know is its, 73 reg, 1.6 V4 petrol engine mk1 transit pop top.

Any help would be much appreciated

you need a specialist classic broker, Footman James and Adrian Flux spring to mind as being helpfull and not aflicted by the "computer says no" mentality

i went to heritage classic insurance last year . it cost 133 pounds . and included european breakdown ..... limited to 5000 miles and you dont build up a no claims bonus .that was for a 79 camper

try heritage insurance, they have insured my 1978 mk2 autosleeper pop top for £95 fully comp. been with them a few times now and had no problems

Peter James or Lancaster. Frankly the customer service at Footman James stinks, however you can still get a reasonable deal if you ever get to speak to anyone!!!

Thanks for the advice, I will have a phone around on tuesday. I am sure I will be a regular on here from now one with plenty more questions! Hopefully get my self up to transit mania in the summer too.

I can't understand Footman James,the customer service is very poor,I have two vehicles with them but trying to talk with someone on the phone is a nightmare and e-mails are replied to by an auto response thingie thats frankly useless.
I wont be renewing either of my policies.

i use a firm called hic they seem very good so far!

I think he will struggle big time to get classic insurance for his age, i think you might have to be 25 or over. I was with Footman James for years, firstly with classic cars then the classic campers, but they wont touch my mk2 cause its on a Q plate!

Correct! No where would even speak to me..... How ever, I phoned HIC as my friend who is 21 just insured his VW camper there. They sorted me out a very decent price, £321 fully comp, Might sound alot to most people but for someone my age i think that is pretty good! Shall now be picking it up saturday. Quick question...
What is the best engine oil to use, and also which lead additive?

I always use Duckhams Q 20/50 for my van, and use the Castrol lead replacement additive, pref the one with octane booster.

I’ve just taken out insurance last night and if you are still with them foggy08 pm me for my real name as the nice chap Liam said that they could sort you out a referral reward (probably only a couple of quid but might pay for a beer) as I said it was someone on this forum who recommended them to me. (Couldn’t believe it was only £114 for the year, I’m a new classic van owner though so I’ve not experienced the joys of cheaper insurance before)
