1973 Ford Transit Custom SWB Camper, Selling advice.

Postby GLC » Wed May 05, 2021 9:16 pm

Hi,

I'm looking to sell my late Grandfathers 1973 Ford Transit Custom SWB camper conversion. He passed away back in Feb this year and my Grandmother has asked if I can help find it a new home.

He brought this brand new [ although might have been pre registered ] from one of the Ford Main Dealers in Birmingham, originally as a van. Then at about 5 years old he had it converted by a company called Motorhomes International, which I've been unable to find any information on. It was his only vehicle for many years and our family has had lots of happy memories, from various family holidays/ adventures.

I think that some time in the late 80's it came off the road for repairs, which sadly he never got round too. So it has sat for around 30+ years. It's pretty much complete but is safe to say, now a major project or at least a good source of spares.

The engine is pretty much complete but have been unable at present, to establish if it will turn over or if it's seized. Interior is still in reasonable/ good condition overall and complete. The vehicle has covered 59,000 miles from new.

My Grandmother is 88 and lives with my Disabled Uncle in a rural location, so I'm looking for a hassle free sale. Not really wanting to go down the ebay route etc and have random people turning up or lowlife timewasters.

So if anyone can help guide us on where best to sell, or know anybody who would be interested in taking on this on. Or can help give a rough idea on it's value. It would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend looking for a MK1 Transit camper, the body work will not phase him but he wants an original camper interior. Have you any pictures of the interior? & where is it located? My email if its easier to send pictures is ralphmk1@hotmail.co.uk

If you think it's worth £3000 Neil you should go and buy it then, that's worth £700 or £800 tops

i said start the price at 3 grand and see where it goes and who wants it a one owner van with an unusual conversion may attract interest :?: to say its worth 700 is just silly unless of course your a transit breaker like you or ralph then yes so you can make more when you cut it up

Cheers Neil, I'm still considering ebay as a option. I'm just in two minds about it. My main concerned is letting strangers/ timewasters etc onto my Grandmothers property. Given that they are still coming to terms with my Grandfathers passing.

The interior is still in pretty decent shape, the dash, steering wheel and floor mat are ok. Just one split in the vinyl of the Drivers seat. Even has a PYE 8 track I believe! Rear conversion is still ok, just some of the wooden side panels has suffered.

Hi Ralph,

If you can bare with me, I'll try and get some photo's next week of the interior. It's not far off the M42, Near Birmingham.

Thanks Neil for the heads up. :) I've added it to my watch list now, currently on £2020 with under a day left. So watching with interest.

I haven't had the chance yet to get more photo's of our Transit. As I've been busy trying to clear the unwanted junk that's currently blocking it in!

yes and yours is more complete and original than that one,, a classic camper expert may pay good money if that company did limited numbers
