Mk1 2.0L V4 Overdrive

Postby bravo5 » Thu Jul 29, 2021 3:33 pm

Well my friends a terrible thing happened last Thursday at Thirlmere, in the words of the AA Man "the gearbox has sh*t its self all overr the road." Where on Earth do I go from here to repair my beloved MK1 57 thousand mile Camper?

It needs a gear box and overdrive a potential propshaft and engine mounts. Do Saab V4s even fit?

A concerned mk1 owner.

Looks like a nice Mk1 Autosleeper.

First thing is that Saab V4 is a Cologne V4 which came with a max capacity of 1.7L. With yours being 2.0L, then the engine is an Essex V4 so completely different.

I am assuming that gearbox seized and you came to a shuddering stop hence the reference to propshaft and mounts. Unless the propshaft is actually bent then the likelihood is that it will be OK. It may need checking but generally they put up with a fair amount of abuse.

Getting the gearbox rebuilt depends on how bad it is. If the case is not punctured by any bits flying around then it should be repairable but to do it properly will not be cheap. Maybe better to look for a used gearbox on ebay as they do come up but getting rarer. Although getting a used box means the condition is unknown. Always worth a PM to "Ralph.9" on this forum to see if he can help. If you want your own gearbox rebuilt then take time to look around. People here may be able to suggest gearbox workshops but need to know which part of the country you are in.

I did have some new boxes but I think they have all been sold, I will check & let you know Is your prop a sliding spline or bolt on flange?
