The o/d gearbox has a electric controlled unit that you clicked in on 3rd & 4 gear it was fitted in place of the tail shaft of a 4 speed box but you can’t bolt it onto a standard 4 speed without changing the output shaft of the gearbox so would be best to get a complete box with overdrive fitted .We never had a mk 1 or 2 with a o/d box at work but I think you could get them on the options list .I have fitted one to a mk2 and a mk 3 on the mk2 I didn’t get the gearbox rear crossmember the mounting point for the rubber mount is lowered and the rear of the box is wider so I had to cut the centre out and re weld it back in lower and I had to have the propshaft shortened by a propshaft company as it came out of a LWB van .
I really like the O/D box as if not engaged it was just a 4 speed box but you could engage it without dipping the clutch or letting you foot off the accelerator. If you Google it there’s YouTube video and EBay adds that will give you a better idea

To get it looking like that is very good. what sort of paint did you use?

i need to either do mine myself or find someone relatively local ideally in Essex. hopefully won't be too long before i get round to this stage.
