Rear twin wheel hub confusion

Postby meerkatmag » Thu Sep 29, 2022 9:51 am

Hi, I'm trying to fit new hub to my mk3, and I think I might have purchased a mk1 hub by mistake. Is there anyone here that can confirm the differences?

The hub I have looks identical to a mk3 hub except it doesn't seem to have a place for the inner grease seal (the one inside the hub). The outer one fits fine, the bearings fit and the halfshaft fits, I just can't figure out to seal the bearing. I can't find any parts diagrams for MK1 transit hub, that would also help.

Any help appreciated!

I guess what I'm really asking is if the mk1 hub didn't use an inner grease seal. So there was only one seal at the back?

Hi, I totally understand this is a niche question! But if anyone has rebuilt their twin wheel transit mk1 rear hub, can you remember if you used 2 x seals or just 1?? I really need to know if I have mk1 hubs. The seal is shown on this diagram marked in red. Is this not used on mk1 hubs??

Well after many hours of internet searching I have found a diagram of the rear hubs from mk1 transit. And it is missing one of the grease seals found on later models. So I thought I'd post it here just in case someone in the future ever asks the same question (unlikely I know).

Take a look at the library of the Polish portal capri.pl
There you will find a full catalog of Transit Mk1 parts for all versions.
https://www.capri.pl/library/microfilms/transit74
The table of contents is in Polish, but the descriptions of the drawings are in English.
The rear hubs are in the table of contents under the symbol E4.10 (model 60-115) and E4.20 (model 125-175).

According to the catalog, the hub in the Mk1 model has a different marking than in the Mk3 model. :?

That is how I found my Mk1 transit twin rear wheel hub, no seal between the bearings just the one seal so both bearings are lubricated by the axle oil.
