My temp gauge was disconnected but reconnecting it and the gauge goes straight to red/overheat even if the engine is stone cold ….when driven the temp is perfectly fine
Engine is a 2.4 York

Do you know if it worked correctly before it was disconnected? It's probably worth checking the resistance values of the temperature sensor with a multimeter when cold, then hot. Might just be a faulty temperature sensor

Used to e a common problem for a replacement they are colour coded if you look from the top between the nut face and the central electrical connector the insulation ring will be coloured for the different resistance for it to work at different temperatures ranges.
From memory red was a common one .
