H type diff reassembly

Postby jckm2000 » Thu Jun 08, 2023 10:08 am

Morning Folks
I've got hold of a higher ratio diff for my mk2 camper (bigger wheels and tyres make it a necessity)
Unfortunately it's been disassembled, ie the crown wheel assembly is out of the bearer.

Any tips or rules of thumb in how to put it back together whilst getting the bearing tightness and meshing right?
Haynes is useless as ever (no user serviceable parts inside, take to main dealer)

Any ideas?

Any chance you could post a picture or 2 of how disassembled it is so we can see exactly what is required? Setting up a diff and getting the teeth to mesh correctly is critical to it not being noisy or wearing prematurely.

If the pinion is still in the housing, and bearings and oil seal is ok and not going to be stripped and you are using it as is ,if you have to fit new bearings and seal you will need a new collapsible sleeve and you have to set to pre load of a set force to turn the pinion before fitting the crownwheel. If you are just going to refit crownwheel I’d use new bolts to adjust it you will need a DTI gauge to set the backlash it’s done by big nuts ( not a nut as such it’s turned by turning it with the holes in the end that the locking bolts use to stop it turning)on each end of the bearing caps there should be a locking bolt that stops the nut turning when assembled .I can’t give you the exact spec for this as I used to have the Ford workshop manual but I think a full instructions are in the Haynes manual also have a look on YouTube it’s a very useful resource.hope this is all correct as it’s a long time since I used to do them regularly.
