Mk2 transit vented discs

Postby Transit man 1 » Wed Feb 07, 2024 7:12 am

Hi all I have a mk1 transit that I am changing the original front drums with the mk2 front axle with disc brakes.
The only problem is the mk2 discs are the vented ones and I can’t find them anywhere. I can find loads of the solid discs just no vented ones. Could anyone help please many thanks Aaron

If they aren't excessively worn thin or the vents heavily corroded you could always get them skimmed instead. Might be easier than trying to find new replacements

You will need a bigger mastercylinder to fit the vented disc's as they have 4b pot calipers. Just change to solid disc's & 2 pot calipers. Vented disc's are almost impossible to find in 15 years of dealing in Transit parts I only had 5 or 6 pairs.

Ralph,

One of the the Mk3 vented disc types are the same diameter and thickness but are only 43mm "high" instead of 70mm "high". I also think they have the same 5 bolt pattern. I have often wondered if anyone could make a spacer combined with long bolts to enable the Mk3 vented discs to be used. Do you think that is feasible ?

Trouble is it concerns brakes and no-one would want them to fail so it would be a risk and I am sure insurance cos would not like it.

Hi Doug, MK3 disc's are only 254mm in diameter & MK2 & MK2 are 278mm so the calipers wont mount correctly. It would be much easier to just fit solid disc's which are so cheap & readily available.

Yeah I know, but I do like to explore options, silly me.

I knew I had seen something somewhere and it is actually Mk4 but prob the bolts don't line up. 270 x 24

Here are some options to consider:
Availability: Solid discs are much easier to find, and often more affordable.
Performance: Solid discs can still provide adequate braking performance for normal driving.
Considerations: If you frequently tow heavy loads or engage in spirited driving, vented discs might be more beneficial in the long run due to their improved heat handling.
Specialist brake suppliers: Consider contacting specialized brake suppliers catering to classic vehicles. They might have access to wider disc options.
Used parts: Check online marketplaces or salvage yards for used vented discs in good condition.

Just a quick update on that link, I tried to buy them through Ebay and they cancelled order, despite my confirming that all dimensions matched! they didn't seem to believe that any Mk2 has vented discs they only wanted to sell me solids - good luck
