2.5 V6 Carburettor type?

Postby AJCavs » Thu Dec 19, 2024 8:09 pm

I'm after some help in determining what the correct carb should be fitted to my recently acquired Jennings Roadranger. It's apparently the 2.5 V6 from a Granada, which I believe is the Low Compression engine. It's currently fitted with a 38DGAS, the only info I can find is that it's not a good carb for this engine! I'm struggling to find a model number of what should be fitted. The engine seems to run ok but quite rich and is rather thirsty (yep it's a V6). Also it tends to cut out when coming to a stop when warm and I'm not sure it's changing gear correctly- it's a 3 speed auto.
Any help is much appreciated thanks

What makes you think it's not a good carb for that engine? nothing wronge with the DGAS IMHO, the alternative was a pierburg i believe, now they were crap ! get a rebuild kit and give all the drillings a dam good clean with carb clean, any old carb will run rough

the v6 low compression engine in the transit used a single carb [ not sure about the granada] and its jetted for the low compression ,, if you fit a 38 dgas on a v6 transit in place of the single carb it wont run right even worse if its auto

Cant imagine there are many of those engine gearbox combos still about :D but a carbs tend to get the bad press when its often something else which is wrong! have you checked the ignition timing? also as mentioned if someones just lifted a whole setup from another engine of different size or compression you can get odd effects, although in general idle isnt usually the problem as thats adjusteable -its usually progression as you pull away thats worst especially if people have put the breathers and vacuum pipes on all wrong.....
Could you send some pics of the install and the van as I have a recollection of Moting a similar spec van in Birmingham thats idled horribly about 15+ years ago! in fact its idle was so far all over the place it destroyed the vacuum so the brake servo wouldn't work properly, I thing I advised its owner that it was lethal!

Hi Ollie, I can get some pictures and put them up, as far as I'm aware it's the 2.5l v6 Essex with the BW35 gearbox (apparently been rebuilt, looks like new). Someone has fitted a 38DGAS to it. I'm under the impression that the 38DGAS works with the 3.0l but not the 2.5l. I don't think that the kickdown cable is connected to the carb linkage, which from what I've been able to read up on is needed for the correct gear change and obviously the kickdown.
