MK1 Tailgater T-Handle lock?

Postby FrankMk1 » Mon Mar 17, 2025 9:41 pm

Hi, everyone..can anyone please enlighten me; did the Mk1 rear hatch have a locking T-handle or were these all blanked with no lock barrel for the outside? Also, would a handle with locking barrel off a Mk2 work? Currently have a non-locking T-handle on my Mk1 and would like to somehow change it so it to locks from the outside with a key.. Thanks , Frank

my mk1 firevan has the same, i think these were only fitted to the german fire vans, never seen one on a UK van
i suppose the reason was if they got to the fire and all the gear would be locked in then it's a big problem

We had a pair of mk1s at work with lift up tailgate and from memory the locking was a push in lock barrel in the centre of a lift handle the bottom been curved down that you pulled towards you and push the lock in

Here is the page from the parts manual (courtesy of Capri.pl) for the rear door. My 72 firevan has the push button with a lock. It looks to me as if you might be able to dismantle the T handle and replace the cap with a key barrel ?
