Throttle return spring

Postby Mikexx » Wed Jun 04, 2025 1:32 pm

I currently have a return spring that is coaxial to the cable.

It's not ideal as it sort of kinks in on itself and isn't a straight push. As a result the idle is not stable.

I can't seem to find any info on attachment or type and placement of a spring.

Any photos would be appreciated and my setup is not ideal.

They are part of the cable possible the cable is stiff inside due to age you could possibly make a bracket up to put a extra pull spring on depending on what engine you have

Many thanks.

The spring is not the original and is far too great a diameter to be affective.

This is the only place I have found so far that suggests something different. However this is not the same carb as mine and may be the Zenith varianty.

This pic suggests the spring is connected the hole to the left of the "Throttle control level and spindle" arrow:

I need to check mine if it has this 'hole'. It should as it's a Motorcraft carb as per the second pic.

It’s not really the diameter of the spring that controls the pulling force it’s down to the thickness of the spring wire back in the day you could get from motor motor facture,s a selection box with different springs may be worth trying different springs.
If you can if you find a spring that is to strong you can cut them down and reform the hook to reduce its tension it’s also worth checking the coil spring on the carb if it’s to weak.
The cable I was talking about had a coil spring that the inner cable ran through.

I've been looking and it seems they changed to a cable with an integrated spring from around 1975. The one I have looks like:

Yes that’s right the only difference is probably that the latter cable had square mounting hole at the carb that was held in by plastic lugs and a clip the diesel engine had the same setup and changed at the same time.
Have you tried disconnecting the cable to check if it is sticking inside if it’s fraying it maybe the early sign it’s going to snap
