help need a new fuel filler pipe

Postby shepped0 » Thu May 28, 2026 2:47 am

Hi All
need some help
My mk1 has been in the garage over this hot spell and today noticed that fuel was coming out of a perished rubber pipe
This pipe is a small section that attaches to the tank and is secured by 2 jubilee clips
I have enclosed a picture of it
I have currently got the pipe semi secured however it is not safe and wish to replace it (after dumping most of its petrol on my garage floor
Can anyone tell me what size this pipe should be as i do not want to take it off in fear of dumping even more fuel out(i guess will have to once i replace it) and can it order before taking anything off
Any help much appreciated

Looking at the photo you’re going to need a new tank down pipe and flex pipe if you trie to remove it
has the tank got a drain plug in the bottom I’m sure some of the vans at work had one usually a Alan key.

The hose you need is 51mm/2" fuel resistant hose. Make sure it is E10 resistant, better still if it's marine grade and don't use silicon hose as it swells up and goes soft in contact with fuel. Use new hose clips as well. I would replace both sections and the breather hose at the same time which I think was 10mm from memory. It's a bit of a wrestle to push the new hose onto the tank and pipe, so dip the end in a bucket of hot water to soften it first. When you are fitting it spray some lubricant on the end of the pipe to make it slide easier. I tightened all the clips up at the end of the job as it's easier to line everything up nicely first. I would also advise changing the other rubber hoses from the tank sender unit to fuel pipe and from the fuel pipe at the bulkhead to the engine. It's worth doing for safety as old hoses perish and leak and isn't expensive to replace them all. Definitely cheaper than a fuel fire!

Thanks for all the replies purchased a 51mm and a 57mm pipe as I wasn't sure which was the correct size
Managed to get some of the fuel out or at least passed the pipe and purchased new clips as they were about 60 years old
Van currently in the garage immobile so will change the other pipes when I have a bit more space around it
