Postby kiwi_mk2 » Sat May 19, 2007 6:33 am

Hi all, first time writer long time reader, I have a 1979 Mk2 which i'm restoring and was hoping to fit power steering to, does anybody have any ideas of what to use? Cheers Steven

The easiest way is to find a power steering box, but they are rare.

Cheers for that link, very envious of your van! The box you used is that out of a Volvo 164? If not.... what is it from?
Thanks for letting me pick your brains :)

Yes mate its from a 164 the pitman arm is from a HQ holden and the steering column is an EL falcon unit

Mrspivvy's right. Power arms are the answer, not power steering.

apart from the aussies that have engines as heavy as a small house - the standard steering if set up right isnt that heavy - grease the kingpins - correct tyre pressures - tracked up right - good tyres then arms like olive oil will do

Now i know how

the conversion isnt that hard or expensive to do cost me about 200gbp or 560nzd
That was for steering box, modified pitman, steering column, resplined steering link, pumps pullies hoses and brackets

Gday, just wondering if the turning circle is affected by this conversion? and if you'd think an XD/XF steering column would be easier?
and maybe its obvious? but why couldnt either the pitman arm be revesed or the tie rod bolted to the other side?

thanks Dean

Hey mate nice van saw it on ebay are you the new owner?

To shed a little light on my conversion

The turning circle is the same as std

The falcon box is not suitable as it turns the wrong way so if you turn right the van will go left, great if some steals your van but not so good if your unknowing mate drives it

As for using an XD-F column rather than an EF-L unit, its pretty much a matter of what you like as its the same amount of work to fit either

I used the HQ pitman as the transit peice sat the drag link far out in the wheel well and fouled the tyre on 3/4 lock, this was with the transit pitman fitted the std way with the drag link being closest to the chassis, I could not reverse the arm for two reasons, 1: it would of hit the chassis rail 2: the tapered sline end was about 2mm too small to fit the shaft on the box

Hey yeah i just picked the Van up yesterday from ebay.
its got a few issues to sort out but shouldnt be too hard.

i'll be trying to adjust the slop out of My steering box first, but that crazy steering column currently fitted with a headlight stalk switch is a bit too much, plus My indicaters arent self cancelling. if i have difficulty sourcing parts i might as well upgrade to power steering if its going to cost too much. and fit an XE or XF column(will end up with the indicater switch on the "correct" side then also lol)
