regs go by the year the vehicle was registered on, off the top of my head if its pre 91 (ish) its just a visual test, so as long as you dont smoke up the mot station too much your fine. i know that anything made befor 95 then regs are quite forgiving anyway as a lot of kit car builders use engines befor then as they dont have to go to efi and cats etc for it to pass.....

Keep quiet about the engine swap and they'll go by the age of the vehicle.
Not sure how it works for a newer engine in an older vehicle, but you can get round tighter regs by fitting an older engine. My '93 Mini tests without a CAT and with twin carbs because I have clear enough evidence that the engine was produced in 1974 (engine no.s and rough production dates can be tallied up in this case).
This is quite common when trying to get the ancient A-series through an MOT when it's been at all tuned. I've even got a feeling that the tester looked up or entered an engine no. to validate the test first time round, so there may be some sort of DVLA database available to them. Not 100% on that point mind you!

Actually it's pre 80s for the visual test, I think it could be 1981. Emissions always go on the reg of the van, I have never ever had any MOT tester enter anything but the reg no. We have 90s engines in our Mk2s.

My Mk 2 is 1986 and they do a smoke test for the MOT with the computer gadget stuff. It always passes though :D

I always change the oil and filters before the test just to be sure.

A slack throttle cable is also quite handy! and if they don't like that just adjust the max position stop, they can't prove it wasn't like that at the factory..... allthough My MOT bloke just asks me if its smokey cos he doesn't want to do the test and fill his workshop with crud and noise 8)
