heard of them but cant see how they can make unleaded convert to leaded if this can happen at thet price then car manufactures would fit them as standard.also the cost of the catalyst would cost nearly as much as a proper head conversion.may as well do the job proper.never heard of one of these products work properly.

A total complete and utter waste of time. Can't and don't work,no independant test has ever upheld a single one of the claims in the advertisements. No adverts for these devices are accepted by most motoring magazines and publications...guess why!.

broquet

Postby MRspivvy » Sat Sep 03, 2005 11:29 pm

These are shite, they do absolutely nothing. they first came out when it looked like 4 star was going to be phased out, Practical classics magazine did a long term test with them on an austin 1800 B series engine- not suitable for unleaded- and the valve seats were wrecked inside of 6000 miles. The claims made for these broquets have no validity and are not backed up scientifically in any way. steer well clear...The only way to use unleaded safely in an older engine is either add a lead replacement additive (eg castrol valvemaster, other valve seat lubricants are available) or have hardened valve seats fitted. you also need hardened valve seats to run on LPG

what engine is it mk1 V4 or mk2 pinto :?: if its mk2 pinto what i would do is find a sierra pinto injection head - they are unleaded!!, and keep it safe - then run the existing engine on unleaded - you will probly find it lasts years, and if it burns the valve seats out swap it to the sierra head you have!! :D
if its a mk1 V4 then theres no cheep option :( but you do have the advantage of owning a mk1

Don't panic. For running on petrol use an additive, there are all sorts about if you buy one from a maker you know (Holts,Castrol etc) you'll have no problems. As for gas, really the only answer is to use hardened valve seats.BUT if you are driving gently,on low throttle openings then valve seat recession is much, much less of a problem and you might get away with using gas for short periods of time.If you drive fairly gently you should get around 20mpg from a Mk1 on petrol, some of the horrible modern things don't do much better. You can lose just as much fuel through easy to fix mechanical faults (blocked air filter, sticking choke, thermostat stuck open etc) as you gain by spending mega money on alterations.

Must have missed this first time round. I am with everybody else on this one, the in line tgadgets and pellets are a rip off, just buy the petrol addatives. Germany gave up leaded petrol long before we did, and the addadative they sold there has kept many engines going. After all there are loads of 30 YO Mk1 ex fire trannies about!
