when you buy a car of occasion you have to make a technical control to be able to run(drive). A man watches more importing(mattering)

I see now. I think this is an official inspection to see if the van in read worthy. In the UK we call this test the MOT - Ministry Of Transport - test. Here we have them every year after the van or car is three years old.
Do you have to have this test every year like us, every two years like Germany or only when the van changes owners, like some states in America?

Do you mean is there something the mechanic will test that is particular to the Mk2? Not in this country, the test is the same for all vehicles after 1982.

Ah OK. They are very easy to maintain. Like any engine they need a service, as you have just got the van changing the oil and filters would be a good idea. The good news is if you suffer a cam (timing) belt failure the engine will not have any damage. There is enough clearance at the top of the engine (head) for the pistons not to come into contact with the valves.

Seriously what? The valves make no contact with the pistons if the timing belt goes. I have had a timing belt fitted on the side of the road by the AA before, just re set the timing and off you go! Fro this reason it's not critical to keep up the replacement of the timing belt, but if you are going to do a major service, you might as well change it to save you some inconvenience in the future. For your information, the engine is the same (as far as service parts go) as the 2L fitted in the Ford Sierra.

As you are in France, it would be a good idea to order a set of spare spark plugs. We had trouble getting them quickly in the past in France so a spare set would be a good idea for you.
