The earlier the better, though Mk3s are getting harder to find these days. Look for 86-91, even later, I think you could even go to Mk4/early Mk5 (lots of our Mk2s have Mk5 engines). One of them has a 1998 engine, but to fit the engine as is the filter housing had to be move to down by the engine. You can just swap the inlet manifold from an older engine and have the air box on top like a petrol to avoid this. We have our overflows hanging from the brake master! Sounds bodgy I know, but it works fine and have gone through ten years of MOTs like that.
