Fronts of mark 1's England Vs Austrailia

Postby stooy » Fri Apr 22, 2005 2:25 am

I have been informed my steering box is from the english diesel mark 1.
I am wondering in england what engine was fitted with the (for want of a better description) bullnose front pictured below. Because here in AUS our 4 cylinder petrol transits have the flat front with the chrome grille and our 6 cylinders have the bullnose front as on mine, we do not as far as i know have a diesel in mark 1 here. If any one can answer my questions that would be great

Thanks Stewart

in england we had 1.7 and 2ltr v4 essex engines with the flat front also in 76 we had a 1.6 kent inline 4 cylender only in the swb, then diesels started of with the perkins diesel 4108 i think , then came the 2.4 york 4 cylnder ,upto 78
then also with the bullnose front came a 3ltr 100hp v6 ,this was used for police ambualance etc!
my mk1 twin wheel is fitted with a 1.7 german v4
and i have a mk3 twin wheel that has a 3ltr v6 with overdrive gearbox! witch was a emergency rescue vehicle! hope this helps mate! :D

Wow, no factory deisels, was there just no market for them? Petrol must have been very cheap in AUS in the 70s!

Diesel Tranys are still thin on the ground in Aus, i have a contact there that breaks Tranys!! only 1994 onwards though and he has a contract with the Aussy post and he says they are all DOHC 8valve engines running on gas, apparently gas is very big over there with a lot of new vehicles being gas only with no petrol tank, the biggest problem they have is the 5th gear falling out of them where they are in 5th for so long   the Diesel ones they do have are nearly all turbo Tranys with normally asperated virtually unheard of

Yes petrol was cheap here in the 70's well realativaly, when i was about 10 we bought our vintage desoto and we were paying aobut AUS 70c per L now we are paying AUS 110c per L.

LPG is quite popular here in aus i belive aobut 10% of our cars are on gas. Its the smartest way to go because you cut your running costs aobut 50%, increace engine life and help the enviroment too...everybody wins ecexpt the oil companies :D.

On gas i run my transit for $7 per 100km on petrol its about $16 per 100.
