Frying Tonight!

Hi All,

I popped round to the bloke i bought my landliner who has given me the original air filter (frying pan shape). Its bit rusty so i think I'll paint (any suggestions of what paint to use - Hammerite?). Also being technically challenged - I take it i just bolt her on. Unfortunately only one bolt is with the filter - will any bolt the size do?

Any bolt of correct thread will do, line your new ones up with old to check they are same pitch ( tooth spacing)

As for paint - hammerite is fine if you clean it well first and make sure you get all the flakes or rust off - -Remember the point of an air filter is clean air, so make sure there are no abrasive / loose bits inside to be swallowed by engine!!!
you can paint it inside if you like but you need to be sure its really well stuck and petrol/ oil compatible which hammerite should be. in reality if its in use there will be plenty of oil mist inside whilst running to stop it goiung rusty so I'd save myself the chance of flakes coming off and not bother

fremsley you were lucky to find a frying pan ,they are hard to get now as most rotted throu!
but there are 2 type fittings ,some had a bolt into the carb and the later pan pushed over the carb!

Thanks for the advice all. Just got to get over the Mumps and then I'll get on with it.

Just had a look. It doesnt look like it will fit. the one at the moment pushes on and fits with a jubilee clip. There appears nowhere for the frying pan to bolt on. Looks like i have the later engine and earlier frying pan as noted by madmark.

Shame it doesn’t fit, I was going to say, don’t use hammerite!!! prep, prime and paint it, it just looks so much better.
As time goes on, Im beginning to hate hammerite, it looks crap within months and is a b*stard to get off again. “It doesn’t do what it says on the tin”, over rated.

alan hamerite has changed ,its gone ozone frendly and is not the same as it use to be!

im lucky i have about a 1000 mm kitchen wall unit full of n o s hammerite this stuff does do what it says on the tin

Ive got an old tin black gloss, smooth glossy and hard as nails!!!! New tin looks rank after a few months, more like matt finish now....
