Mark 1 - Acceptable side to side play in the steering wheel?

Postby Rolo » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:50 am

How can I adjust the steering box to eliminate the play if the adjustment nut and bolt on it won't do it?

Is this a job anybody with a few common tools can do?

I'm aware this play could also be caused by other lose components in the steering axle but I don't think that's the case here.

Done that already and it seems to be at the end of its travel.

and the box has oil or grease in it!

What should it have?

Oil or grease, and what type?

Should the oil be drained and refilled with new oil every thirty years or so?

Morning Rolo, did you give the steering drop arm a few sharp taps under the drivers wing with a copper mallet ,lots of folks dont do this but just screw in the screw on the box,the secret is the sharp taps on the arm once you have adjusted the screw in the box on,be careful tho to much and you will have steering like an ole milk cart lol :D :D :D

Which way should I hit it?

Up, towards the steering box?
