Erm Not Transit But..... LT77

Postby 214si » Wed Jan 28, 2009 3:41 pm

anybody know how the remote selector mechanism worked on the sd1 for the lt77 box?

could it be modified to fit a mk2?? so i can retain the gear lever in its o.e posistion?

the remote selector on an LT77 from an sd1 isnt really remote, it is still attached to the gearbox by a sizeable casting.

The short answer is yes its possible to make the gearstick come out in the same place by modifying any type of lt77 gearbox
the question is is it worth it? does it really matter if its a few inches out from where it was before?
to be honest o would have thought sd1 type box would but the stick about a foot or so farther back than where it is now,
the standard landrover shortstick setup would be farther forward, or the defender type more so probably too far.
I am afraid you may have to get the tape measure out and mod your floor :(

what in your opinion would be the best box to use??

im really trying to find an adapter plate or similar to mount it to an mt75 as that would solve all my woes, but to no luck

I honestly dont know mate, you will have to try and find some to measure. MT75 would be a good choice, you can get all manner of bellhousings for them for kit cars, but where the gearlever would come on a non transit mt75 i dont know.
i know if you get an adapter made for a transit one the gearlever wont be in the same place as a type9 anyway.
it sounds like you dont want too much engineering involvement so for simplicity an autobox with cable shift may be easier?

ashcroft transmissions or RPI will be able to give you the dimensions fron the bellhousing flange to the gearstick i would think?

i dont mind the engineering aspect of it, its the butchering of a mk2 i wanna prevent and keep it as o.e looking as possible, the gearstick posistion from type 8 to mt75 is very minimal!

auto with cable shift does seem easy but i wouldnt mind keeping it manual either, dont ask me why, just fancy a manual v8!

reason i say this is because its nice and short, and the slector mech looks nice ans simple to mod, just cut selector arms down and re weld :?

its a Rover P5B 3.5 V8 Borg Warner 35

Crap box.......Far to old and inefficient..

Make a plate to adapt the V8 to MT75

Yep crappy box skip fodder.
if you dont mind engineering then make an adapter plate from the v8 to mt75.
either that or use an R380 or lt77.
RPI will or ashcroft transmissions will be able to tell you whick combination of landrover and sherpa/SD1 you need to get a RWD box with everything in the right place.
landrover v8 have a long bellhousing, sd1 a short one. there are 3 types of selecter too so some combination should put the gearstick in the right place.
you have reached the awkward phase in the job where you really need to get the bits and work out what to use or find someone to say exactly what bits to fit. :(
TBH i would get the v8 on the floor, get an MT75 and a pinto adapter plate and see if its possible to machine up a plate to fit the v8 first. the other possibility is use a bellhousing less mt75 and v8 bellhousing. they fit mt75 and v8s in kit cars so its is available. not cheap though.
