fuel system..

Postby panserpilot » Thu Feb 12, 2009 4:36 am

hi i have a mk2 1978 retired posty van. it recently conked out when i drove from katherine to darwin (300kms) a mechanic friend of mine said it was the fuel pump, but when i took it apart the fuel pump was clean and working and the seals were fine. i took the fuel tank off to flush incase that was the problem and also blew out the fuel lines.
the problem is that at speeds above 35km/h the engine cuts out due to fuel starvation. as you can probably tell i am a relative newbie at mechanics but am learning as i go any help would be appreciated. i can take photo's and get more in depth details if anyone thinks they can help...

ps. when i took the fuel tank off i noticed the cap at the top (where all the pipes come from) didn't match the plans i had.
can anybody tell me how the fuel lines are supposed to be set up. it has a carbon cannister if tha t helps at all.... sorry about the information being all over the place......PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Sometimes the pump may look ok but actually be tired. I'd suggest that you get the output pressure checked. I'm not sure but I'd expect around 4 psi minimum. Also, make sure that the fuel pipe isn't routed anywhere it could get too hot as this could cause fuel evaporation. John G
