Steering Box

Postby Duca25 » Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:14 pm

Hi there,

Six months ago I bought a Classic Ford Transit Van. It was used by the ambulance services from Hamburgh ( Germany).
Few weeks ago I realised that a part from the steering box was missing and some grease was spilt over.
So I am looking for a screw-on cap for the Steering box and still I don't find it.
The characteristics of the Van are: Ford Transit 1978-1986. If you don't mind I would like to know if there is any possibility to find this spare part or maybe to let me know the technical specifications: dimensions and type of cap.
I will be very gratefull if you provide me this info. I am from Spain and my name is David.

Thanks so much.

I attach two pics. One from the steering system parts and another from my Van.

David,

Please post a picture of Your steering box. I am afraid You will not find this part sold seperately. I have a friend who has many of these boxes from scrapped MK1 and 2 vans and maybe there is one there with too much play or wear that we can take the cap off.

What "cap" is he referring to? the plate that fits over the box
that converts the steering input from the near vertical stem to the lateral rod/drag arm?
I can't see it on the parts diagram

If its a cover that utilises the three bolt holes starting with "No.2".
then you can make one simply enough like the previous owner did on my van using a cardboard template and some steel sheet or prob alloy as it doesn't look structural

Hi there,

First of all I have to thank all of you for your collaboration and your interest. The part I am asking for is not shown in the picture. I will try to explain more specifically what is this part for. It is situated in the other side if the Steering Box and it is used to fill this with grease or to avoid the spilting out off it.

Although I have never seen this part before, I just realised of it because I have seen some grease over the steering box. I really don't know the characteristics of it and what's exactly the name of this part, that's why I ask you for some help and to provide me with some usefull information to buy this part....dimensions, made of, if it is thread shaped to get firmly connected with the steering box...etc.

I asked in many Ford Official sites and I only received the following: That's a relic and we can't help you....That's so discouraging!!

Thanks a lot for your help!

The part you require is a small plastic bung for filling the box with grease. you will find that the bungs from the end of gearbox oil containers will push straight in  I.E the little red bung in the end of the plastic spout.
