Fitting an air conditioner to a Mk1 V4 Essex

Postby j6393 » Sat Jan 31, 2009 12:27 pm

Temperatures here for the last couple of weeks have been well over 40C and will be for some time - I am getting too old to use the 2 X 50 air conditioner and wondered if anyone else had fitted an air conditioner to a Mk1 Transit with V4 Essex engine (cab/chassis) and if so, what problems etc to expect.

dont know if this will be of any help but summit racing in usa do retrofit aircon kits the only problems i can see reguards fitting is the positioning of the compressor so it can be driven fom the crank pulley and where to site the unit inside the cab or another option (if you could find one!) was an evaporative cooler such as used as an accesory many years ago i once saw a picture of one it looked like a large tube fitted in one of the windows another option i once considered was the cooling gear from a refridgerated van as this is electrically powered and also usually a self contained unit fitted to the roof or also try firms doing parts for motorhomes as these often have air fitted to them

hi there,

i am checking out putting a roof top aircon into my 1975 v4 essex camper.

here is a good site in the uk.

it seems the unit is only 340 pounds or around 600 dollars, so this would be a good way to cool your van.

here is the link.

http://www.outdoorgb.com/p/12v_air_conditioners/

maybe you could also run a vent system so you can pump some air into your cabin while you are on the move?

thats what i am looking at doing.

regards,

geoff.

Thanks for the replies.

Because of the engineering problems with the V4 I have been looking at the possiblity of fitting a caravan type rooftop aircon.

hi guys,

its bubble bursting time...

in my previous post i stated the roof top airconditioner was only 338 pounds.

turns out this is just for the MOUNTING BRACKET!!! actual cost for the unit is something over 2000 pounds. (ouch)

looks like we will have to find another alternative to the rooftop aircon.

sorry to get you excited.

regards,
geoff.
