Is my turbo shot?

Postby Retrohowla » Sat May 09, 2009 1:01 pm

After deciding to convert my mk2 70ps di to turbo i have quickly managed to obtain most of the parts i need (36 hours from first phone call to collection of parts) 8)
So well happy there but i have a feeling the turbo i have bought is shot :(

The parts came from a 1993 minibus with 120k on the clock (rotten chassis mot failure) the block was used in another non turbo van so was good enough to bother transplanting it i guess

Basically the small vac pipe on the induction side of the turbo that goes to the waste gate actuator has oil in it, and the boost pipes and inlet manifold have a thick oily carbony coating throughout, am i correct in thinking the turbo seals are shot?

If it is a gonner its not a disaster as the whole job lot of parts cost 50 quid and i thought it was worth that for all the other parts even if the turbo is gone?
At least i have cash left in the kitty if i need to source another although i bet i dont have the same luck finding another so quickly :(

Its quite common to find oil residue in the places you mention, it is an indication that the turbo is quite "well used" However i find that in most cases the turbo still functions normally :D I would fit it all up and when you change the oil and filter, put a good quality oil treatment such as Forte or Wurth, in as well. Odds on you will have no trouble

Ok nice one thanks Muttley, i will go ahead and fit it all up whilst keeping an eye out for a replacement just in case.

I have seen that you can get a brand new turbo for £200, is this right? I seems very cheap but they seem readily available at this price?

Now all i need is some 100ps injectors and a gasket set

Anyone got some injectors thay wanna sell? Hopefull i know but hey you gotta ask!
