mk2 starter solonoid thingy on the side of the battery tray

i need some help guys,as the title almost describes, i have what i can only describe as a solonoid i think made by lucas and has 2 poles and one spade connector on it, mine has the spade connector broken off and the van wont crank on the key anymore, dont really understand if i need it as i know as i have fitted a rover v8 but i need to know how to bypass it if thats the case!! definatly this is the fault but i dont know what it does and if its neaded any more , hoping someone will be able to help,many thanks tony

Has your rover v8 got a pre engaged starter then? if not then you still need the solenoid! The snapped off spade sounds like the actual starter circuit, post a pic if you are not sure!

Your rover will have a pre-engaged starter, you can take a wire straight from the start terminal on the ignition switch (the one thats live when you turn the key to start) to the switch terminal on the solenoid on the Rover starter. Or take the wire that went to the broken terminal on the old solenoid and extend that down to the Rover solenoid. Make sure that you use sufficiently heavy cable though :wink:

that solenoid is there to lighten the current draw on the key switch, you can bypass it temporarily to get you going by linking the spade cable red/white or black/yellow straight to the starter spade terminal, and your van will wind over, its a common solenoid that you can buy at any motor factors , probably around 10 quid,
