changing oil on my mk1

Postby shepped0 » Mon Aug 10, 2009 10:55 pm

Just in the process of changing the oil on the van and suddenly thought what should be the correct grade of oil I should be using. Seem to recall my father using 10w40 mineral oil is this correct or should it be 20w50 mineral
? I have a 69 Mk1 petrol engine van any help appreciated

As long as youbuy a well known brand (Castrol,Duckhams,Mobil etc) you'll not go far wrong.
Old engines don't like the modern thin oils as the clearances aren't as fine as the modern units and they tend to leak and go through the oil quicker. They were usually designed to run on 20-50.

I concur :D

I changed from 10/40 to 20/50 and the engine feels a lot better for it and surprisingly enough the oil now seems to stay in the engine rather than being sprayed all over the engine bay
