Bubbling water in my MK1 heater matrix

Postby welshrussell » Sun Aug 16, 2009 8:57 pm

Just wanted to ask if this was a good or bad thing :?

When I start up my van, for the first few seconds I can hear a lot of water gurgling and bubbling about in what seems to be the heater matrix (radiator) area of the cab :(

Then after a few revs, etc the noise disappears.

Should I be worried by these sounds :?:

It's air trapped at the top of the heater assembly being pushed out.Nothing to worry about, the poor design of the cooling system means air gets trapped there.

Don't suppose you have taken your heater unit out have you?

My fan has stopped working and just wondered if it was easy to access the unit to take it out for re-furb / replace?

Yes - I have checked the fuse, and no, it's not a dody switch as I've replaced it with a NOS item...they're supposed to be black by the way - I thought all dash switches were faded grey

Hi Chris, Yes this is what I had to do to get at the fan and motor when my fan stopped working. In the end it was a plastic bracket that had broken off a terminal that holds a little square thing that gets pressed against a copper winding :?

Simpler than it sounds

But Mark is right - it was an absolute cow of a job :x

Connecting the ducting hoses back onto the box ended up with bloody knuckles and cramp from lying on the cab floor

One thing to watch out for is taking the 2 rubber hoses off the heater rad, fiddly and easy to break stuff :o

Good luck mate, but hopefully you;ll find it's just something broke off the motor

Take care when you are ready to "drop" the housing assembly, its quite heavy if you try to do it one handed its easy to drop it and damage the sticky-out water pipes! I would recommend a suitable cushion
ready on the cab floor.
I had a noisy fan and used the opportunity whilst the housing was accessible, to force a little grease into where you can see the fan motor spindle, but not as much fun as trying to spray wd40 into the scuttle air intake at speed!
