mk2 steering box - can i swap for steering rack?

think i need new steering box
is there anyway to fix myself or can i swap it for a steering rack from a later model - mk3/4 ??

Not without changing the whole front suspension, just replace the box. Wherabouts are you?

they are not cheap but not optional either. The good news is its not like you will be doing it again any time soon!

very loose/woolly steering

had couple people say about a mk3 banana engine swap and put a steering rack in at same time - is this a good idea ?

I have seen a Mk1 with original beam axle that was converted with a Camry power steer rack....but I reckon the bump steer would have been awful!
I have my own ideas on how rack and beam axle COULD work together but it's a bit of an engineering job...

New boxes are £185 on eBay, still cheaper than a rack.

worth while spares are plenty and it is easy to sort out power steering :wink:

thanx for that

seen one on ebay already - saved in watch list, was waiting to see if any cheaper

the one from trader on site is cheaper as they dont charge extra for return of old unit with refund after :)

looks like i'm gonna have to fork out £165 to sort it out :(
