banana engine into mk2 ? plus steering rack

Postby GavSuz » Wed Oct 31, 2012 9:33 pm

how hard or easy is it to put a 2.5 diesel banana engine and steering rack system into a mk2 ?

heard theres very little electrics involved - how about engine and box mounts ?
exhaust manifold mounting up the same point ?
radiator ? - could do with new one anyway as found it got a hole in
box to prop shaft mounting ? - same ? need new bearings/rubbers anyway

steering system - suppose new hubs etc off mk3 will be needed

Thanx

hi its not as hard as you think my mk2 was petrol it now run a 2.5 DI and a mt75 5 speed box use early doughnut engine mounts i would do it for ya really you need a early mk3 donor vehicle that has rotted out with a decent e/box in my 81 mk you see in the pic is a 92 engine and box and its still on same front springs etc my next add on is front struts off a mk3 and power steering exhaust ya just cut and shut too suit

the engine is the easy bit, the rack conversion is harder work. It depends what work you have done in the past and your skill level

thanx for the info

main reason for wanting to do it is for parts - and also steering rack is easier to fix/replace ( once in )

current 2.4d engine is good tho - only 78k ( in km so presume miles is lower )

on the basis of that mileage, why make that much work for yourself? Serviced properly the yorkie will plod on and the steering box is good for about 100k miles. At least!!

yeh think i'l stick with the engine

the steering is horrible tho - really woolly and wobly
already ordered a new drag link end that connects to steering box arm as it was all perrished
if that cures the problem then i'l be happy - if not i'l have to fork out for recon steering box
