weekend mishap 2......... ouch

Postby tuscan440 » Thu Aug 04, 2005 10:21 am

after me and mates recovered from our first weekend mishap (see other post in this section) back in may we managed to fix the van and have her ready for bug jam festival up in norhtants. unfortunately lcuk was against us and after 200 miles of faultless driving the wheel destroyed itself wihtin the space of about 10 miles, we pulled into services on 3 wheel studs and those left were extremely tapered, SO nearly repeating what happened back in May where the wheel fell off and ripped the arch off with it. the bad thing is this is the alloy wheel that came off in the first place, but the damage on it was barely even visible and even the police thought it was ok to reuse the wheel. we have done about 400 miles on that wheel since this mishap and im just gutted that we have lost one of the set now. not only that but it has managed to ripp away the drum and weld the three remaining studs into the back plate. considering we were towing a caravan and i was driving again with 6 people in the back i think i had my frst near death experience!! christ knows what wu dhave happened if it did come off, i dont want to think about it.lesson learnt, never trust a policeman.

considering the bearing was starting to make a humming noise anyway me and my friends are on the look out for a new rear axle or a spare mk2 transit 130 single axle wheelbase.we have managed to find one axle but is gona set us back £175. so if anyonne can help it would be appreciated.

cheers

 mate are you sure you have the correct wheel nuts?

i had a mk2 escort and the alloys used to come loose every few months - when i looked into it there was 2 types of wheel nut 55degree taper and 60degree taper!! i had the wrong one!!!

wow you saw me whats the chances!!!
well unfortunately it never realy crossed my mind that alloys would be weaker than steelies, but wish i had known! the wheel nuts are definetley the right ones, its just i think the first weekend mishap didnt help it at all, the other wheels are fine luckily enough, u can get 15 inch versions of these wheels on discoveries, so they ant be too hard to find. hopefully i'll locate one soon

Tuscan, those wheels are just as strong as steel ones as they are pressed steel wheels!

The main difference is the offset putting more leverage on the joints!!

did you have any vibrations?
if the wheel was buckled it'll loosen the nuts, just had the same problem on me cortina but they came loose due to a knackerd wheel bearing.

Got my commercial operator/spoilsport hat on now. Can't help thinking that with the caravan and 6 people and luggage/camping gear, you were well overloaded anyway. Thoug, with my 'ah, it'll be alreet' hat on, the wheel should have been OK for the wieght. The axle you have found is overpriced, I have bought twin wheel axles for £100 before, did this include fitting? Wheel bearings can go off very quickly, I once had one in a total state of collapse in only 4 miles!

yeah there was vibration for a short while but it was night on the M1 and we were limping it to services. had it been half a mile longer i rekon we would have been splattered all over the M1 by now, seriously.
we made a concious effort to keep weight away from van, and there was stillquite a bit of suspension travel leftno the price doesnt include fitting fred!!. well if anyone knows of a single axle that is cheaper PLEASE PLEASE TELL me.
dont know what you mean by PCD when referring to wheels but i can assure you at my mates farm the discovery wheels are identical but are 15" instead of 14". maybe these arent standard wheels then.

As was mentioned in another thread, Mk2 and Mk3 axles are the same, should be easier to get hold of and cheaper. I think you could easily go up to 95.

Yeah Luke, you might be right. All the other 'crossover' bits are usually 87-91. I keep thinking about twin wheel axles.

PCD is the spacing of the stud holes, they may be similar wheels but they won't fit, they are just aftermarket wheels the company made em for loads of different cars, seen em on 4 stud cars as well :)
