Starter Motor to 1969 Perkins 4-108

Hi, I'm searching details about the starter for this Transit.
I was told it's a Lucas 45 so I searched the Internet and found a starter on AutoDoc that should be compatible.
I received it yesterday just to find out that...

The flange bolt pattern didn't really match.
The solenoid pointed straight downwards instead of upwards.
The motor was turned backwards.

So any kind of information regarding the original starter will be very much appreciated.

solenoid is usually mounted parallel on the starter body ?? just have your old one rebuilt makes things simple

I don't have any old starter, that's my problem.

Yes the solenoid is parallel to the starter body, but then depending on the assembly rotation the solenoid can be on top of the starter or under the starter, down to the ground. That's how this one came.

If I had a starter to look at life had been very easy and I could most probably quite easy find a replacement, my problem is I don't have any starter at all in the car. Just a big empty hole.

Sadly none of them fits a Transit MK1.

Isn’t there anyone in this forum who knows what starter is used for this motor? I’m still hoping someone will be able to help me.

I have an old boat fitted with a Perkins 4107. When it came time to have the starter motor reconditioned I took it to a local place that specialised in motor rebuilds. They said it was a really odd motor that fitted the wrong way round and rotated opposite to normal and was only fitted to the mk1 transit. However they were able to recondition it as all the internal components were the same. So maybe you can try looking on UK boat forums where maybe someone has an old unit for reconditioning? There are still lots of these engines in boats here.

Thanks for your input. Knowning that even 4-107 can fit is good to know and can be helpful in my search.
