Anyone imported one of these MK1 ex fire service transits from Germany?
I'm looking for a suitable candidate to 'convert' into a 6 seater plus room for my race bike.
Been looking at loads of these vans on the various sales websites, but not sure on the importing bit.

Amongst others on here, the boss man Luke has done it. If I remember correctly he rode over on a motorbike, and drove it back with the bike inside. I'm sure there's a thread on here somewhere as to how it all works

You can buy tax and insurance in the post office for a week to get it home , but you better move fast before the fellow with a head like an explosion in a mattress factory scuppers the lot on you

Thanks, so not really that daunting, I think a little trip on northsea ferries might be in order, could have a weekend away and go and view a few before I settle on one.
Theres quite a few on here http://www.autoscout24.com I've emailed the owners about them, awaiting replies.

Back axle ratio is something I didn't know about? Am I wrong to doubt uprated ratios are easily found?

the ratios in the axle can be swapped with the later mk6 transit search kenb's post on here with details i think 4.63 is the best ratio but thats fine for a lwb

When I did it 7 years ago now (good grief), I was told that the temporary export insurance which can be bought in Germany, was not valid in the UK. So if you get stopped once back in the UK, then you have a problem. Again things may have changed but suggest you check and satisfy yourself.

I ended up by hiring a 3.5tonne self drive transporter (no tacho) for a couple of days and doing a long road trip to pick mine up. Weight is right on the limit so being cautious I did it on my own and only filled the transporter fuel tank to a maximum of half full with the van on the back. It meant travelling as a commercial vehicle on the ferry but that wasn't too bad.

Alternatively if you use the German export system, you could put it onto a trailer once you get it off the ferry and do the UK part of the journey that way.

I bought one in Germany and had it brought over 7 years ago, bought the van from a German dealer that dealt purely in German fire vehicles. He arranged the transportation on my behalf. I paid around £1900 for the van and £800 for it to be brought over on a transporter to my door, saved the hassle of bringing it over myself especially with the very low diff ratio

No found not as yet, just trying to get sorted as I was hoping to get over to look at one or two in the flesh before I buy.
Sadly also the deal on the car I was selling fell through.
