Its a plastic shaft in split tube either end so I'm thinking there must be a way of increasing the resistance. I've replaced one and had the same thing happen but yep velcro was an idea I had too tho concerns that it might rip the roof liner down.

It used to be used all the time on Nylon Bushes for 'track controll arms', made them easy to slip into place but after a few hours they went absolutely solid
