MK1 Chrome Window Wipers repair?

Postby welshrussell » Fri Jul 04, 2008 10:09 pm

I have got a set of 20" chrome wiper arms for my MK1 but they need a bit of restoration!

One has the rubber missing and the other one is split.

My query is: can I replace just the rubber wiper blades :?:

All the modern blades I've seen come in black with the rubber already in a black steel arm - all the parts on my wiper arms are in chrome :?

Does anyone then know where I can buy the rubbers :?:

Thank you all very muchily :D

If you only want the chrome blades you can still get them. Not to sure about the arms though.

Just buy some black ones, a roll of proper ally sticky tape (Ratsport online http://www.ratsport.com) and 'chrome' the wiper blades with that! I managed to fit £1 shop wiper blades that way, pull the whole wiper blade off the arm, then unclip the bit that slides on to the arm. Clip that on to the cheapo blades after you 'chrome' them instead of the ones supplied in the pack, which don't fit the arms. The ally tape is thich enough not to peel or wrinkle, and the adhesive is weather proof.

I think the wiper arms are stainless. I just polished mine.

Thank you people - I'll certainly now try a local autoparts shop first.

Thanks for all the tips though :D

I'd like to see that :)

It's just I am so cack handed with stuff like that - it always ends up pear shaped :?

The thing I found really helpful was a pointy rubber pencil end, to push the tape into the holes in the wiper blades. It's only a bit thicker than kitchen foil, so moulds to the arms really easily

Depends if you want to pay for them, and I had the tape and the wiper blades in, and didn't want them wait for them to turn up in the post off ebay. I can't get chrome ones locally, tried before. These are the ones I did, will get a better closer pic tomorrow.

Yes - I've got modern black ones on at the moment but have the original chrome heads, but not the arms :(

The ones in the pic are originally black, I 'chromed' them with the ally tape.

Sorry Fred - please ignore this :!:

I've got myself all mixed up now

I have actually chrome arms on the van

What I am talking about is the bit where the black rubber wiper blade fits into a tooth like strip, which can be bent tight onto the arms :!:

Does this make sense :?:

I need to know how to get these on and off so I can fit new rubbers to them.

I'll try and post a photo - cause I don't think I can explain myself clearly enough :?
