5 speed / od gearbox in mk1

Hello

What gearbox can i use to replace the 4speed in a mk1 transit 2 litre? Can i use a different gearbox from taunus or sierra or someting. Or should i use an OD box? Also changing the rear axle ration would be fine too if i can get something that fits. Ford Zephyr maybe?

hello i would go for the overdrive box myself its the easiest option, you will need to drill a couple of holes for the cross member and remove the overhead gearbox carrier, also add a prop centre bearing carrier, but all much easier than messing about with back axles and butchering your gearstick hole.

I think the overdirve is the only option, if it's a V4.

I've had Zephyr-6 crown wheel and pinion fitted to orginal Mk1 diff to accomodate Ford 3.0 liter V6 motor with Cressida 5 speed gear box.

well apart from the fact the type9 is pants.

type 9 is ok if its in good shape, also changing the diff ratio is the way forward if your looking for a higher speed at lower revs, much more effective than a box change

what bellhousing mates a V4 to a type 9

A 4 speed type E bellhousing on a type 9 with a long input shaft, i hope lol.

dont forget the type9 has a bit that comes out of the gearbox when selecting reverse ,the type 9 bellhouseing has this bilt into it!

from memory i had a conversion made to rover , it had to have a hole cut out in the bellhouseing so to select reverse !

i once lent a bellhousing to a mate so he could do this conversion and he told me the bolts were different - mabe thats what he meant
do you mean you had a type 9 on a rover v8

yes for a short wile , the bellhouseing was made from a coulpe of difrent ones and joined!
in the end i went auto!
