i believe they will swap over, although it is more common to swap the otherway, i do know that mk3 ones will swap onto a mk2 :) (talking twin rear wheelers only here)

as for how many springs, mine had twins but now has triples, i have seen 5 leaf ones, but they were mighty stiff

Ian I didn't know you wanted springs, I have some standard (2 leaf) Mk2, and you can make up bigger springs using others and bigger u bolts, or buy them new from Paddington Springs in Wembley. Not sure where from at your bit of the counrty though.

You mean you put newer, much more curved springs, without having to remove the mounting saddle from the top of the axle and rewelding it at the bottom?

That's exactly what I had to do after fabricating a pair of shackles for the rear spring eye out of a Toyota truck pair of shackles.

Does the same apply to the whole rear axle and wheels?

I'm trying to update my Mark 1 dual rear wheel axle as a matter of urgency because of brake, diff whine and leak problems and if I can fit a much newer than a Mark 2 one it would be great.

as far as i know yes, couple of things to watch out for

1) bushes/shackles might be of different dimensions
2) becareful of chassis cab ones (flatbeds, dropsiders) because the chassis rails curve inwards in that area and the distance between the saddles might be different .... i say only "might" be different, you'll have to measure the one your getting to be 100% sure its ok
3) Rear diff Ratio
4) mk3 axles are 1 1/2 to 2 inches narrower than mk2 versions (the difference being between the spring saddle and the drum

and also i am not sure if there isnt some difference in the saddle locations between your vehicles over there to ours over here, as far as i know both the mk1 and mk2's over here had the saddle on top of the axle so the springs sits down onto it

hope this helps a little bit, hopefully someone with a mk1 that has done this sort of swap will chip in here with some definative answers for you
