Heres a shot in the dark!
I recently jumped into my mk2 and started her up to hear a very disturbing noise. The engine revved up and idled as usual. I opened the bonnet a looked down at the starter. It was still engaged with the fly wheel. I took a 2x2 piece of timber and beat it to get it to disengage.
The starter was dodgey for some time leading up to that.

Failing that:
Did you try to drive it? Any loss of power?

Is it hissing?

Mine did that when a valve went...

NO its not hissing no loss of power just sounds like has no exhaust on,or something broken in engine and sounds like a traction engine best way to describe it in running.it revs up and ticks over but noisy that his why i am frustrated in not knowing what has gone wrong

Check the exhaust manifold bolts. It may not be obvious at first glance, but one may be loose or missing.

We need to more about the noise. Is it a knock, does it get louder when pulling, any smoke anywhere etc etc.
revving an engine wthats noisy is a bit dodgy,if its something getting ready to 'let go' better it does it at low revs than high ones whatever it is.

Yip Fred, sounds like manifold - either loose bolts or gasket has gone.

Think about it. If the exhaust is getting directly about the engine at the manifold, it will sound very loud. If it's coming out of the head it would barely run.

Should be easy to find an exhaust leak. With the engine hot and running on a fast tickover trickle light oil in the carb and look for blue smoke where it shouldn't be.

Glad you are sorted. I have just realised I have mistaken your description of traction engine for tractor, which would be a loud exhaust noise. It's really hard to work out a noise without hearing it!
