Tranist mk 1 coachbuilt with 3.1 V6 engine??

Postby travellinggirl » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:57 pm

I might be going to view a Mk 1 coachbuilt thats had a 3.1 V6 engine put in..
Can anyone tell me about this type of engine? Im assuming that it drinks lots of petrol???!! The person hasnt mentioned whether its petrol or diesel, but i know its manual.

Also, the guy wants to keep the number plates when the vans sold - what happens next?

Thanks a lot!

is it MOT'd :?:
as it needs to be to transfer the plate off - other than that shouldn't be a problem :D

Thanks all..

I cant really afford to keep it running if it drinks like im assuming it will as its going to be my only vehicle.. my current camper does about 19mpg and thats hard enough!

Would there be any way around this? Im wondering how much it might cost for me to source another engine, pay for a garage to take this one out and drop a transit diesel engine in?
Any ideas?

Oh, yes by the way, it is the one on ebay - it looks lovely!!!

 it looks a cracker!
mpg will be if you drive sencible there is a good chance you will get 15-18mpg ,as the engine wont be working hard, if it was a 2ltr it would be the same! if you were to change the engine to diesel it would be noisey and very heavy on the steering!
looks nice and its had alot of money put into it!
if you go and look make shure you check for damp in the top bed area!

OH  So do you mean that even with a 2.5 diesel engine i'll only get around 15-18mpg if i take it easy??? Is a diesel engine heavier in general, than a petrol?
Oh dear..im not doing very well here.

no it wasnt my van, the diesel will be about 30mpg but ,what you have to work out is the cost to get it fitted and also buy a engine!this would cost a fair bit ,that works out alot of petrol you could have used!
the diesel engine will make the steering very heavy to move ,myself i would leave the v6 petrol in there !

Di's aren't that good MPGwise anyway. Mine never returned more than 20 mpg despite a propper good service and check over (although servicing improved it a lot!). I worked out that I could swap a rover v8 from a Range Rover and still run the van for the same kind of cost per week. Given the ever increasing gap in the cost of diesel and petrol you'd probably be aswell off in the more powerfull quieter petrol, and being a v6 it will have plenty of grunt for shifting its weight compared to a pinto 4 Cylinder.
