Tax exempt or not tax exempt. That is the question

Postby steddy_eddy » Tue Sep 05, 2006 10:08 pm

A friend today told me that her 1973 beetle has been given tax exemption because although it was first registered in 1973, she has proved to DVLA, from VW, that the chassis was BUILT in 1972. The tax exemption is for vehicles built before 1/1/73. However this proof was all arranged by previous owner.

My van was registered 22/2/73 so MUST have been made in 1972.....surely.

Has anyone ever heard of this, and can anyone suggest a way to go about trying to find out / prove it's true in my case.

This could save me a fortune and make this van even more precious to me!!

ford build dates are very easy - just post the last two letters of the chassis number - this is the build code - me or someone else I'm sure will be able to look it up for you

After a quick google I think I worked it out. NU (mine) is Feb 1973
NJ (comets) is January 1973

Can anyone check this. I'm deeply disappointed

In to old vws myself yer na

Its common practice in the vw sceen to get your bug on a 73 or even 74/75 tax exempt

We wright to the vw musium with the vin they send you a dating cert saying when the car was made

If its under 1973

Take the cert to the dvla with a m.o.t and a inshrance cert

they then give you a new reg and a tax disk (free)

hay presto

the same will apply to fords right to them and get a year of manufacture and figgers crossed free tax
When you can fit an expensive repair panel with out blowing holes in it THEN you are a welder my son!

very unusual to find a ford built before the cut off date thats registered more than a few months later, fords sold pretty quickly unlike VW's substandard cars that sat about waiting for a buyer for years. ;)

alot of transits are normaly around 1month min before sale so ie if you have a 73 that was registerd in feb then there is a good chance it was made in dec 72!

Try Peter at the Transit Van Club, he has a lot of contacts in Ford, and given he runs the club may be able to give you letter for the DVLA

much faster to sell a ford thats built at dagenham than an import car that comes in on a ship, so our 70's fords didnt stay unregistered for long. :(

you've done it - you've got the build dates here - if you write to the factory this is what they will go by to date the vehicle

Hi All,

New member here. I'm just about to take possession of my new MK1 Landliner. However, I'm wondering if her date of manufacture might be earlier than the 1974 registration. Can anyone help - FORD have been pretty useless as they do not have the transit on thier OASIS system?

The VIN number is BD05NG68090.

Also does anyone know what the original paint code colour would be? Its E908.

Cheers in advance for any help.
