hope yours is going ok robbie any teething issues mate ?
and tim you been round your mates lately hint hint wink wink
yes as always i had a few teething issues, mostly due to nothing else than fuel starvation,
the engine that i rebuilt in a week is fkin bulletproof. i spent the obscene £140 for a STEEL timing gear after horror stories bout nylon ones in essex n colognes stripping teeth and clashing valves n pistons....
was a tough one but i decided better safe than sorry!
boy you should have heard how loud it was (as pre warned by Burton Power) it sounded like an electric dodgem, but after 2 days of short blasts n tinkering it all of a sudden next time was silent!! guess the treacle i put in it done its job and voila, now i dont have to worry bout her indoors saying "im not going in that its too loud"
the fuel issue is cos Di fuel lines are inches away from the right manifold, which gets a wee bit warm...
i got 20 foot of 5/16 petrol hose im gonna run a new flow n return to my fuel tank cos i don't trust the plastic, curley straw like hose the diesel ran on. im also moving my leccy fuel pump out of engine bay and onto tank itself or nearby... the flow will run along chassis rail if poss and where it approaches the engine bay ill get it tucked as far toward the wing as possible and add some silver heat shield from a breakers or dumped motor nearby.
i got 20m of exhaust heat wrap all used and ideally could do with more. another idea would be to bastardize some mild steel ones, but shaping them to fit by choppy choppy weldy weldy might cause flow issues and loose bhp, which would suck.
get rid of the fan and get at least one kick ass electric fan... i got 2 from a ldv and they pull me along
these engines get hot, not so hot they pop buy fekin hot cos theyre cast iron.
Anyone joining this club i would seriously recommend you get:-
new fuel line(s) its so cheap i got 20 foot for less than £40(poss £32?)
either brand new fuel pump or electric pump (not more than 3psi w/o reg)
Defo electric fans AND switch etc that fits in pipes - see Tim
Electronic ignition kit to replace points
biggest air filter you gan get - i got 14" x 3" round chrome one from a yank hot rod
And i think it would be rude not to have at least 3" bore for the exhaust all the way , di pipe is already this!!
finished with a stainless sports box
plenty of heat wrap etc also think about modifying scuttle to allow bit more airflow thru bay
then get out there and upset mk7 drivers

best bit is when they finally catch you up looking like "what the fcuks in that???"

(not yet braved over 105 yet its bit shakey with the wellers, but got there bloody faster than the last two engines )
EDIT forgot to say got a leaky rocker cover im gonna get some alloy ones when/if i get to save £160 !
tilo then i carry oil and will eventually go buy some more gaskets. might try the rubber ones this time as i suspect the cork ones although not shrunk might need to be thicker, also get those funny washers from ebay that spread the load out across more of the rocker covers!
EDIT EDIT hmmm mabey i sprayed em with oil too
