It sounds more like its wired up wrong if you have to short it out to start the engine.
I haven't a clue what the brown thing with a check pattern is maybe its Sherlock Holmes hat.Why can't you ask your mechanic what it is,or doesn't he know?

hi guys,

im having him fit a new electric pump and a new solnoid.

should get rid of the clicking and improve the power no end.

apparently the old pump was a basket case.

ill let you know about the test run.

just had the new electric fuel pump fitted and the new solenoid.

taking it for a test run tonight and will report back.

hi guys,

had the test run..now engine getting fuel ok with no clicking.

now im having the mechanic look at the carbs and he can do a full tune up now we know the fuel is getting through properly.
