Adaptor plate for MT75 Gearbox to Essex V4/V6 Interest?

Right then lads,
had a bit of spare time today so I fitted an old V6 Essex block in the Surrogate Mother.

The block has one of my adapter plates on it and is sitting correctly positioned in the Mk5 engine bay;



I then started on the engine mountings.
The left hand engine mounting plate in place on the block;


and the right hand one;


Because the engine mounting point on the Essex block is so low compared to the pinto block, these mountings will be constructed from CNC profile cut pieces of flat plate welded together.
More on the mountings later.

As Luke says, the point of using an adapter plate is to leave the existing gearbox in place, this reduces work and ensures that not just prop-shaft is standard but speedo drive, clutch cable and reverse light switching are unaffected.

Did a bit more work on the engine mountings, the individual parts are drawn up using a CAD program, printed out onto paper and cut out. The paper templates are assessed for size/shape and adjusted as necessary.
When we are happy with the shape of the template, we produce one in steel. The drawings will be submitted for CNC profiling, ensuring that each additional item is identical to the part you see here.

The 'cut-out' at the rear of the mounting allows for starter motor removal.

Once that engine mount is welded is that complete? or will you be adding sides to the long plate going to the engine mount? only asking as it`s good imformation for me for when i do an engine conversion in the future.

I am certain that the engine mount as above will NOT support the engine sufficiently well, a great deal of 'head scratching' has occurred while deciding how best to stiffen it.
Eventually I decided to 'split' a piece of box section and slide it over the rear of the horizontal plate;

The open ends will be 'capped' to avoid water ingress.

Right hand engine mounting is now completed, again, CAD drawings have been made to enable CNC profiled copies to be produced.

Blond question, why is one leg shorter than t'other? did the Di sit slightly over on one side or is it just due to shape of block?

Yes mate, the engines in the Mk3/4/5 Transits do sit with the crankshaft center-line offset towards the right hand side of the van, no idea why

The socket extension you can see in the earlier pictures was set to engage the front pulley bolt of the di engine when the engine mountings were in place. This 'jig' was used to align the Pinto engine, then by changing the socket, the Essex.
If you look at your engine you will see that the right hand mounting is also shorter.

Got a bit more done to the conversion in between jobs today, refitted the front pulley;


Fitted the front pulley adapter;

this allows the fitment of a second pulley to drive the power steering pump.

The pulley adapter is made to accept a power steering pump pulley, (the larger type), from a 2.5di Transit;


Spent some time with a supplier today, we might have some good news on the clutch application, one is being delivered tomorrow, fingers crossed!
Just the Pas pump bracket to do now
