ok,a quick run down on how to start an old ford that can't be bothered.(this is tongue in cheek)
Guys feel free to comment or add bits in here.
This assumes there’s one specific thing wrong and its not just a combination of everything being past its best or out of tune.
1/go put the kettle on.
2/ pull your spark plugs out and clean them. Put them back in .Do this one at a time so as not to mix up your timing. Then take off your dizzy cap and check your points. Check the gaps, rotate your engine and wait until the dizzy opens your points. This will be when the cam in the dizzy operates your points. Check your gap size and make sure the points are clean.
3/ Go make a cup of tea. Milk and one sugar for me, unless it’s a decent sized cup then make it 1 and a half. Oh and its essential to use quality parts here, Tetley or nothing. Failure to use quality arts may result in total failure and me going of to watch tv.
4/take the air filter off( assuming you have one on!) and operate the throttle, can you see any sign of fuel being injected into the engine?
5/Run around to the cab like an idiot and try and start it.
6/If it runs great, look all smug and take your cup back into the kitchen bragging about how cool these old vans are to work on. if not go to step 7.
7/ pour a cap full of fuel down the carb. Preferably the type your vehicle runs on.
8/ run around to the cab like an idiot and try and start it. If it starts and runs ok go to step 6 and plan on a carb rebuild. If it starts and dies after a few seconds then go have another cup of tea and tell everyone these old vans need specialist care.
9/ get a taxi
10/Then find someone to rebuild your carb and set up your engine while taking kudos for knowing when to get the experts in.
11/ if nothing happens when the key is turned with fuel down the carb you need to find your spark.
12/ I’m bored now.
If all of them either have no effect then its probably a combination of everything, eg you need a good tune and service.
