My astras box does the same thing but not so bad and i would expect it from a 175000 mile box but this mt75 is supposed to only be 90k? possibley not the original box or more likely the mileage was incorrect, saying that the engine is pretty sweet as far as i can tell :?
With regards to the pump timing i think it will be trial and error for a few more weeks, thing is some days it seems quicker/noiseier/quieter/slower than other days :? i cant work out whats going on unless its very sensitive to air temp?

Retrohowla wrote:I was slightly dissapointed though with the gearbox on the turbo motor mind, it seems to have a worn bearing, possible input shaft that makes quite a loud noise and vibration at low revs but clears once the revs pick up :( my old box is sweet as a nut so may end up putting this one back in, oh how i love fitting boxes laying on my back

I thought i should go for this when a tuning nut mentioned to me that viscous coupling fans can drain up to 5% of your power

Hi retro
Thanks for the pics, I didn't had anything particular to look at but , as I have never seen an engine like that in reality, (Old di's I have) I also noted the size of the induction pipes because , when I fitted the turbo (not a standart di turbo but another) I made the intake pipe elbo and fittings out of a silencer pipe   But it does seem the same size.

Also why would a vicous fan take that power? :?: I dont' have a vicous coupling fan but a direct bolted to the water pump, it was like that when I bought it
thanks :D

Purely for illustration, think of how many KW electric motor you would need to power a fan, belt and pulley to suck that amount of air that quickly over the radiator, 3KW :?: 3KW = 4HP on a 70Hp engine =6%
Viscous couplings have the added benefit of only operating when warm, but yours will suck that kind of power all the time and unfortunately it has the unfortunate effect of sapping power when it's most needed, at lower revs as the engine overcomes the fan assemblies inertia.

Alanwh, you beat me to it but very well put, i did this mod on my old sierra 2.8v6, the dyno run after indeed proved an additional 4% power gain.

Ok so im now up to 3.5 turns on the top pump screw  only just started to smoke, and even then its only when i first put my foot down i get a small black puff then clears straight away :D
I think i might leave it at that unless anyone thinks otherwise???

She really goes well now, low down torque is really good and will pull through the gears really well now, the top end power seems to tail off very early though but i guess being a long stroke motor this is to be expected

She now surprises much more modern vans, i was on the motorway this morn and a lwb sprinter came up the outside on a hill, i put my foot down to see if i could keep up and crept past him 8) He looked across at me as if to say WHAT THE FECK! 8) 8)

Granted he could of been fully laden but hey my old girl has a fair bit of weight in her too

Yeah I put one in my stage 2 Dolly sprint way back when Adam was a lad

Tickety Boo

Yeah you get torque in one big dollop
ps what final drive ratio you got :?:

I would have been Soooo tempted to give him the bird

What a feeling though mate eh :?: bloody well done :D :D

Thanks for the explanation, well put 8)
You know, even I was aware that the fan takes power, because always thought for a big engine like that a simple fan would not take too much, But its 4 to 6% which can be usefull if left in engine power.
So maybe when Il be putting the pump, it will be your fault to pay some $$$ for an eletric fan

Also retrowhala in the other post I quoted the part you mentioned about vibration but I forgot to write on it
On mine with the 70ps di Mt75, vibration was a great problem since I bought the van.
Changed everything! balanced prop, diff , and replace the gearbox with another one which I changed myself the bearing between the input and main shaft, but not changed all the needle bearing, and new spigot bearing and the vibration still remains especialy in 4th when not reving that much.
The gearbox I took out has some play in input shaft, and the spigot bearing had about 3mm loose, as it was ceased :o

Final drive ratio is 4.11 8)

Im not sure how inaccurate my speedo is now, im yet to go out with the sat nav to check it but all speeds so far have been quoted from the speedo so guessing actual speeds will be slightly higher than read-out.

One issue i do still have is the mk2 clutch pedle just sits with constant load on the trust bearing, ok so its only the weight of the pedel but would it be an idea to put a spring on the thrust bearing lever arm just to pull the peddle up to the stop?
Its just i can hear the trust bearing chirping on the clutch fingers as im driving

Redeemer, i have done a complete electric fan conversion for under £75 , thats 2 slimline fans (9inch) a thermostatic switch, relay, wiring and connectors 8)

Gearbox wise im gonna live with the noise for now and see if she gets any worse, ive not fitted the plasic shrouds back to it due to the crank seal soaking them in oil, so i left them off and think maybe because im not used to this box yet im just over reacting slightly :?
(yes i have replaced the crank seal and gasket)

One thing i might add though, the extra power is sooo addictive but hell the fuel she now uses if i boot it
I used to get low 20's around town with the 70ps, at a guess now its 15 but i cant help boosting it everywhere

Im gonna put the covers back on, finish the last few odd jobs, fill her up and stat behaving again..........................most of the time

Wann say a big thanks to all you guys who helped me out with this modd, the information ive gathered from all of you has been invaluble

Thanks again! :D :D
