Removing the bonnet would help a little. But looking for a more permanent solution, and something I can use on the street. You can feel the engine is stronger when it is cold, and I tow a lot with the van. So I think an intercooler is the way to go. There are a few kits available. I can't run an air-to-air, as there is no room behind the grille. So will have to be a water to air, with the radiator mounted underneath and towards the rear, with air ducted to it.

Could you not make an air ram and duct it to blow cool air over the charger?

I bought one of these Mk8 Transit Alcoa wheels,in 16x6 and 6x180. Going to try and fit them to the van. The plan is to fit a disc braked Mk7 DRW rear axle, with a ratio in the 3's. I will make adaptors or completely new hubs for the front to match the stud pattern. Tyres will be around 205/60x16 to get the circumference about right. I have always like the look of these style of wheels, and I think they will look badass on the old bus As an added bonus, they are 4kgs lighter per wheel than the 14x5.5' currently fitted!

if you don't work them out they just slowly sieze up , I use mine 3 or 4 days a week runs better that way

Took the Mk1 out there today too. The reason the Mk1 is sitting low in the back is that there is about 1000kgs of parts in there. Coupled with the trailer weight, there is probably 3 ton hooked on the towbar! With a load of parts in the tow vehicle, I reckon it must have been around 5 ton total - it sure felt heavy!

Did a little trial fitting of my new Alcoa alloy wheels last week. I managed to get a set of new Continental Vanco tyres in 215/65x16 off a new Transit Custom, that had larger wheels fitted, for very little money

The fronts will need adaptors made to change from 6x170mm PCD to 6x180 of the wheels. I will draw them up and get them machined. I am going to fit a disc braked Mk7 rear axle to this van,(thanks Ralph!) so that will take care of the back end.

A few pics of them dummied up. Being larger diameter they have the effect of making the van look smaller. But I think they look good anyway, what do you guys reckon?

fair enough, the Euroliners do look quite good for a wheel cover. I did consider them too. But they are, at the end of the day, just a bit of "bling" and don't add anything else other than looks.

One of the advantages with these is that I can get away from the 14" rim, which is getting very limited on tyre choice. With this setup I get a wide choice of modern tyres, and have fitted Conti Vanco 2's. Also, the mass of these wheels is considerably less than the old steel rims, so less unsprung weight means it will ride through bumps better.

well yes but from 25 yards the alloys look like wheel covers anyway, almost euroliners with holes punched in.. chrome wheels or covers is going to give an old mk 2 tranny the bling factor but at the end of the day you spend the cash on what you want
