Is there an easy way of checking if the thrust bearings are as bad as all that?
will the steering behave a certain way, like being sluggish or something?

would unscrweing the greasecap and checking that way work?

I lift the wheels and check the gap today before trying to grease them.
Rotten MK2 camper built from a pickup almost 30 years ago, soon becoming a pickup until i get the materials to rebuild the camper part again.

Clean it all down so you can see. Then jack the vehicle up so that the wheels hang free (better still take them off).Using a long bar as a lever try and lift the stub assembly vertically. There should only be a very small movement up and down.

Bugger.

:(

Have you checked: -

.........................Castor?

.........................Toe in?

Did you grease it with the weight on?
As well as with the weight off?

Urban myth I expect.
.

How are you supposed to adjust caster on a MK1/2 Transit?

You don’t it’s fixed from manufacture the only adjustment is the tracking.

Just foind out. There’s a small wedge between the spring and beam. That could easily be modified :)

I think that is just a spacer to lift the ride hight on Diesel vans not sure if they fitted it to the later Petrol vans all they do is slightly increase the ride hight due to the extra weight of the York / DI engine I cannot remember if they fitted them on the Perkins in the mk 1 .

There's a spacer and a small wedge. I'll get a picture.

Yes but it’s a solid beam axle the only way to change anything but the tracking is to bend the beam or stub axle

What is the result you desire? The wedge on the axle is for Caster angle, why change it?

I have no desire to do so, I'm just saying it's easy to do so if wanted.
