rear diff mk1 swb bus

Postby FFP » Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:33 am

Good morning,

I have a 1.5 swb 1969 bus, it has a single wheel round rear axle (atlas?)
1250kg empty

i'm installing a modern tdi/jtd engine with a 4 speed OD as im planningt ouse it as daily transport

I'v been told that the v6 capri diff wil fit
Is this correct, as i'm planning to instal a 3.22 or 3.09 diff
are the splines etc the same when converting this diff

I', looking for +/- 2000rpm @60mph for milage, the tdi engine has max torq (250nm) and combined best milage at these revs

I'v calculated the needed kw en nm at several speeds ( with air and rol resistance etc even the fuel efficiency graphs of different engines) and these match the engine pretty good

so wil the diff fit, and does anybody have experience with modern diesel engines in brick like air-resistence big frontal area vans

greets ,

marc

I wil post some pictures same day tomorow, as there were no reply's to the questions asked

i'v got a 1.6 gtd engine in right now, fits ok with vw radiator. stil leeves space for the intercooler and very thin. (gtd hase the same dimentions as any vw 4cyl)

makes for great conversions as the vw engines are very universal, you can fit 150 bhp tdi, G60 or 20vt engines. even vr6 engine will fit in flat front

made a conversion plate for a 4 speed OD gearbox to the vw fwd bellhousing and schortened the Propshaft

gearbox is about 2 inch back from original ( bent gear lever)

if you had the tube type axle then its possible to fit a 3.44 or even 3.09 with a bit of modification. if you have the normale type square axle then no 3.9-1 is the lowest ratio

its the older, round axle type with inspection plate at the rear

3.09 with modification?? what mods? the casing should be the same as capri??

conversion took more efford than expected

hydrolic clutch, waterhoses, engine and gearbox mounts etc.

how do I post pictures?? hyperlink?

in the square type axle 4.11 is a nice ratio the problem is the lower you go in numbers its harder to get the power ,as you are pushing along a brick ,over gear it and you will die on the hills like my mk1 ha ha
