Okay, now I’m lost. If the rules change, will they test under the old rules re emissions or do you end up with an exempt vehicle with a failed mot?

If you test an exempt vehicle and it fails, you are then own an unroadworthy vehicle and are aware of that fact. If you use it without rectifying those failure points then you are bang to rights if pulled by Plod or VOSA. If you dont test it then you are still liable to hassle if pulled by the boys but more likely to get a rectifivation notice

Prodding the embers of the fire here a bit, as I was following with interest as my MK2 is heavily modified but it's all gone quiet.

Has anyone in the trade got any current standards for the Mot exemption rule now it's in force?

From what I've been able to find, there seems to be a few loop holes surrounding modification in the name of better safety, efficiency and where original parts are not practically available to preserve a historical vehicle.

Now I understand there's an element of interpretation with this, for instance, a small floor pan mod to fit a 5 speed mt75, makes the vehicle more economical.

A MK3 rear axle fitted to a MK2 because you couldn't get a brake back plate for love nor money, "not practically possible"

2.5 DI fitted in place of a 2.0l pinto, 30mpg Vs 18mpg, "economic" argument again.

So even though modified, were all still preserving historic vehicles and by definition, should be eligible for not examption

I would agree the new rules are ambiguous but that surely is in the favour of the owner that wishes to make changes and for "safety" reasons as you suggest. One exception to your list the rules says no change to a monocoque body at all.

Now see this is where interpretation comes in again, as I understood the section regarding monocoque body shells, changes made to preserve a historical vehicle where original parts are no longer reasonably available are acceptable.

But the more I've been reading, there's just going to be too many grey areas that they could sting me if the worst should happen like an accident or something.

The old girl fly's through every year anyway as I keep her tip top mechanically, but it took me years to find a garage that could see past her ratty image and test it fairly.

If the old chap retires, I'm back to the lists and lists of nonsense advisories and failure's just because cosmetically, she looks like she's been in a hedge for 30 years.
